HISTORY:
Dorothea Savoy should have never gotten pregnant. That’s what the doctors had told her husband, Hoyt, the day the twins were born. They told him that she was just one of those women not meant for child birth; that while they’d tried everything they could, they weren’t able to save her.
Perhaps if the twin’s mother had survived, their lives would have been drastically different. Or at least, that’s what Logan always used to muse. Lena, however, never believed so. Sure, before the twins were born their father had started working reputable jobs, at the pained request of Dorothea. Sure, maybe Hoyt would have stayed away from crime, working instead at auto shops and construction sites. But Lena doubts that. Hoyt didn’t just pull heists because he needed the money, but because he enjoyed it. There was a thrill that came with the job that was impossible to resist. Lena was a like her father in this respect.
Growing up she loved learning the tricks of the trade; how to pick locks, hoe disable simple alarm systems, how to pick pockets. Though her brother often felt sorry for the marks they stole from, Lena had no such sympathy. They never stole from anyone who couldn’t afford it. They didn’t take peoples life savings. They stole from the privileged, the ‘spoiled and entitled’ elitists. That’s how Lena saw it.
Still, it didn’t take the twins long to want to strike out on their own. Teaching his children the art of theft was probably the only good thing he ever did for them. Hoyt was a hard man, a mean man, and a violent drunk. Lena and Logan parted ways with Hoyt when they were sixteen after a particularly heated argument that ended with a bruised Lena, a Logan with a couple fractured ribs, and a Hoyt with a dislocated shoulder and broken femur. It was for the best.
The separation from Hoyt did bring up one unsuspecting problem. Two years after going off on their own, the twins discovered a secret of their genetics: they were werewolves. Lena was the first to change. It was a terrifying experience. She thought she had gone mad. The more she panicked about it, the more frequently she changed. This hellish period was only survived because of Logan. He’d been her rock. When he wasn’t taking care of Lena, he was researching everything he could on werewolves, and by the time his own first change came eight months later, the transition was much smoother.
They traveled, never staying in one place for too long. They pulled gambits, both contracted or for themselves. They made sure to find a forest every full moon. They were survivors.
Then two weeks ago, on his way back from a solo job, Logan disappeared. The shock of it was enough to cripple Lena for a time. But she pulled herself together. She had to. Logan was out there somewhere and she had to find him. The last time she’d spoken to him, he’d told her he was going to stop in a town called Meadow Heights to sleep for the evening. That was her destination.
